Chinese Music - Old and New E-mail

Harmony Chinese Music Ensemble will be presenting a unique programme of solo and ensemble pieces featuring traditional and contemporary Chinese music performed on Chinese traditional instruments in the wonderful acoustic setting of the Canongate Kirk.

In concert with the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra E-mail

As well as the traditional airs, reels, jigs and strathspeys of the orchestra, the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra (AFO) has invited Harmony Ensemble to play some traditional music from China and join them in a performance of the song and dance Moli Hua 茉莉花 (Jasmine Flower) and Zi Zhu Diao 紫竹调 (Purple Bamboo Melody).

This concert celebrates the departure of the AFO to China just 3 days later. They have been invited by the Chinese Ministry of Culture to give a concert tour of China from June 30 to July 14. They will play a wide range of Scottish traditional music as well as these Chinese pieces (arranged by Eddie McGuire of Harmony Ensemble). Venues include Beijing Forbidden City Concert Hall (July 2), Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre (July 4), Suzhou People’s Meeting Hall (July 5), as well as concerts in Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Making Music Scotland Conference E-mail

Harmony Ensemble was invited by Making Music to give a talk about our music and collaboration work, and a demonstration of the Chinese instruments for their Annual Conference.  Making Music represent and support over 2,700 voluntary and amateur music groups throughout the UK. Harmony Ensemble is a new associate member of Making Music and is a proud receiver of the Making Music development grant.

In the series "A Concert, a Cocktail and a Canape" at Oran Mor on Monday, February 9th at 6pm the Harmony Chinese music ensemble will perform with the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert to celebrate the 2009 Chinese New Year - the Year of the Ox. The programme will include Air and Dances (茉莉花, 紫竹调 and 喜洋洋) arranged by Eddie McGuire, Kangding Love Song (康定情歌), Mountain Passes (关山月), an ancient Chinese melody arranged by Kimho Ip (Hong Kong born composer who studied at Edinburgh University), a world premiere of Zweisamkeit V composed by Kimho Ip as well as an improvisation and the Beijing opera inspired singing from Fong Liu. The conductor will be Peter Jones.

Interactive Chinese New Year celebrations E-mail

Hawthornden Court, National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

Harmony Ensemble will be collaborating with members of the Intercultural Music and Arts Project (iMAP) to put on an interactive Chinese New Year celebration. We will perform Chinese New Year music and collaborate with the children drumming group from Ipswich Community Radio. The children are between four and twelve years old and the group will be led by Lydia, a special guest from Hong Kong.

There will be drumming, music & film, calligraphy and animation, all scheduled between 1 and 4pm. Why not take part in an open workshop of drumming and movement? See you there!
